How we compile this directory
Every fact on this site is either drawn from a reputable public source we name below or taken from a school’s own official website. We do not rank schools, we do not publish tuition, acceptance-rate, or career-outcome figures, and we never sell placement in our listings.
Who’s behind this site
List of Film Schools is an independent, informational directory produced by the List of Film Schools Editorial Team and operated by VentureCorp Publishing, an independent publisher. We are not a school, a recruiter, or an agent for any institution, and we are not affiliated with the schools listed. That independence is the point: it lets us present the basic facts neutrally and link you to each school’s own site so you can verify everything and decide for yourself.
Where our data comes from
| Data | Source | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Institutional control (public / private), location | U.S. Dept. of Education College Scorecard & IPEDS | Whether each school is public or private; city / state |
| Institution type | Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education | Cross-checking the kind of institution |
| Program name, degrees offered, focus, founding year | Each school’s official website (.edu / institutional site), cross-referenced with reputable references | The per-school summary and the degree levels listed |
The same source data feeds our side-by-side comparison and our directory data study. Every per-school page links out to the institution’s own site as the authoritative source of truth.
How we calculate
This is a curated directory, not an algorithmic ranking. A school is included when it is a real, well-known film, cinema, or media-arts program at an accredited institution. We deliberately keep each entry to durable, verifiable facts — program name, parent institution, city and state, public or private control, founding year, and the broad degree levels offered (such as BA, BFA, MFA, or PhD).
We do not publish rankings, tuition figures, acceptance rates, graduate-outcome statistics, or earnings and career-success promises. Those numbers change frequently, are easy to get wrong, and — in the case of outcome claims — are exactly the for-profit-college marketing style we avoid. We also do not promote for-profit colleges.
Independence & how we make money
List of Film Schools is free to read. We support the site in two ways, and neither changes the facts we show you or which schools we include:
- Free program matching. If you use our optional matching form, we help you compare film and media programs at no cost and with no obligation.
- Affiliate links. Some links on this site may be partner links, and we may earn a commission — at no extra cost to you — if you sign up through one. Affiliate relationships are disclosed on the site and in our Privacy Policy.
Placement is never for sale. A school cannot pay to be listed, removed, described differently, or featured. Our editorial selections (for example the best-known and by-discipline hubs) are orientation aids, not rankings, and are not influenced by any commercial relationship.
Keeping it current
Programs evolve — degrees are added or retired, departments are renamed, and institutional details shift over time. We review the directory periodically against the sources above and update entries as needed; each page carries a “last reviewed” date and links to the school’s official site, which is always the most current authority. If you spot something out of date, please tell us.
